3-Step Process to Craft a Resume Using ChatGPT

If you’re looking for a job, your resume is the first impression. However, you know it should be customized for each job opportunity. But, that’s so time consuming and maybe writing isn’t your thing.

Enter ChatGPT, or any other AI writing tool assistant.

Remember, AI tools do have flaws. So, it’s important to review your results for grammar and typos, especially if your industry has unique words that could trip up AI writers.

3-Step Resume Process

This simple three-step process can be customized based on your industry, action words, and experience. The items in the brackets are to be replaced by your choice as shown below.

Step 1: Craft your resume.

Yes, you need to start with something before ChatGPT can work its magic. Indeed offers these resume tips for those who haven’t written one in a while.

Step 2: High-Impact Summary

Enter the following prompt into ChatGPT. At the end of the prompt, also include your existing resume summary.

Prompt: Based on this original summary, and the following resume, create an improved and high-impact summary for me. Include these action words [enter your action words], using data to support soft skills wherever possible, and optimize for both SEO and ATS keywords. [add your summary at the end of the prompt]

Choose action words to include in the prompt

expanded, built, conceived, developed, determined, initiated, publicized, directed, administered, advanced, installed, instituted, invented, promoted, led

Step 3: Experience Bullet Points

Feed the bot some details on the size and scope of your role.

Prompt: Using the data and numbers provided, create three to five concise bullet points for my roles at [employer 1, employer 2, employer 3]. Make sure that the numbers are tied to impact and be sure to always support any adverbs.

What’s an adverb?

An adverb is a word that modifies (describes) a verb (“he sings loudly”), an adjective (“very tall”), another adverb (“ended too quickly”), or even a whole sentence (“Fortunately, I had brought an umbrella.”). Adverbs often end in -ly, but some (such as fast) look exactly the same as their adjective counterparts.

Example: Consider that “hired a new team quickly” is not as powerful as saying you hired seven people in less than three months.

Summary Example

Step 1 – Resume: From Indeed, I’m using a bookkeeper resume template.

Step 2 – Summary: In ChatGPT, I used the prompt, choose my action words [expanded, administered, instituted], and entered the resume summary from the template. Clicked enter. Reviewed the results and tweaked it to fit my personality.

Step 3 – Experience Bullet Points: In ChatGPT, I used the prompt. In the employer brackets, I entered the name of the companies listed on the resume.

Example: Using the data and numbers provided, create three to five concise bullet points for my roles at [Chelsea Group, Smile Dentistry]. Make sure that the numbers are tied to impact and be sure to always support any adverbs. Then pasted my work experience at the end. Clicked enter. Reviewed the results and tweaked it to fit my personality.
